Basic Meaning: an example using similarity
Senses:
[Falling under the same] standard, allegory, precedent, trope (Skt. dṛṣṭânta, dṛṣṭânta, dṛṣṭântaḥ...sādharmyeṇa; Tib. dpe). In Buddhist logic 因明, an example that is the same in type as the thesis 宗 that is to be proved, and which includes the meaning of the reason. The third stage of the three part syllogism 三支作法. The classical example provided in the logic texts is where one proposes that sound is impermanent, based on the fact that is created. The example provided for other created things is pottery, which is also created, and is, from this particular perspective, the same. As distinguished from an example that uses difference 異喩. The Foguang Dictionary offers a detailed explanation of this term.
