Basic Meaning: Heshang Moheyan
Senses:
(fl. ca. eighth century) (Tib. Hwa shang Ma ha ya na). The Chinese Chan 禪 master who, according to Tibetan tradition, debated with Kamalaśīla (Tib. Padma'i ngang tshul 蓮華戒, fl. eighth century) in the
'Council of bSam yas,'
held during the reign of Khri Srong lde btsan (r. 754–ca. 799). Moheyan was said to be associated with the
'East Mountain Teaching'
(Ch. 東山法門, Dongshan Famen) of the Northern School (Ch. 北宗, Beizong) of Chan, but his name does not appear in Chinese sources. The Tibetan account states that he advocated a doctrine of
'sudden awakening'
(Ch. 頓悟, dunwu; Tib. cig car 'jug pa), and that his main practice involved eliminating all thought as the most rapid path to awakening. [John Powers, Dan Lusthaus; source(s): HDT]
