Basic Meaning: Twenty Verses on Consciousness-only

Senses:

  • The Weishi ershi lun, Viṃśatikā-vṛtti. 1 fasc.; T 1590.31.74–77. By Vasubandhu 世親, translated in 661 by Xuanzang 玄奘. There are also translations by Prajñāruci 般若流支 (with the title 唯識論, T 1588) and Paramârtha 眞諦 (with the title 大乘唯識論; T 1589). Along with the Triṃśikā 唯識三十頌 this was one of Vasubandhuʼs most philosophically important Yogâcāra works, refuting the realism of the non-Buddhist and pre-Mahāyāna schools. Hamilton translated Xuanzangʼs version and Kuijiʼs commentary (述記); also in Francis Cook's, Three Texts on Consciousness Only pp. 387–408 . Translations not from Chinese include Anacker (1984) and Kochumuttom (1982). (Skt. *Viṃśatikā kārikā, Viṃśatikā-vijñapti-mātratā-siddhi). A complete edition of the Sanskrit text (verses along with Vasubandhuʼs autocommentary), along with an English translation is contained in Tola and Dragonetti (2004).
