問答

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: question and answer

Senses:

  • In Chan, a discussion between a master and disciple. A Chinese literary form for religious teaching that has its precedents in such Chinese classics as the Analects, Mencius, Zhuangzi, and so forth. Also written as 商量 and 問酬. In Chan training, the disciple will ask a question about the Buddhist teachings, and the Chan master intuitively responds. Or, alternatively, the master will pose a question to the student to test the authenticity of the studentʼs practice, and judge according to the content of the response. These exchanges usually take place using passages from the gong'an 公案 literature (Skt. pṛcchā-visarjana; Tib. dri ba dang lan glan pa; dris pa'i lan gdab pa; 'dri ba dang lan gdab pa). 〔瑜伽論 T 1579.30.289b26〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): YBh-Ind]
