In the Tattvasiddhi 成實論, four ways in which phenomena are only nominally existent:
- They are nominal in that they arise from causes 因生假, and have no fundamental reality of their own.
- They are nominal in that they are dependently arisen 緣成假; they are merely names applied to the combination of the five aggregates 五蘊.
- They are nominal in terms of relativity 相待假; short and long, heavy and light, big and small, etc. only exist relative to each other.
- They exist nominally by continuity 相續假; instants of form, sound, etc., give rise to succesive instants.
