Basic Meaning: forty-one stages
Senses:
The forty-one stages in the bodhisattva path as outlined by the Yogâcāra school. These include the ten abodes 十住, ten practices 十行, ten dedications of merit 十廻向, the ten grounds 十地, and virtual enlightenment 等覺. Later on, East Asian Mahāyāna schools such as Huayan and Tiantai added the ten stages of faith 十信 and marvelous enlightenment 妙覺 to these to comprise their fifty-two stage scheme 五十二位. These can also be mapped to the forty stages 四十位 taught in the Brahmāʼs Net Sutra. [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura]
