Basic Meaning: four data fields
Senses:
Also written 四微. A reference to the data-fields of form 色塵, odor 香塵, taste 味塵, and tactile sensation 觸塵 — i.e., the five sense fields 五塵 minus sound. Chen is an earlier Abhidharma/Yogâcāra translation for the Sanskrit viṣaya (or artha), which would be rendered by Xuanzang as 境. The usage of the ideograph 塵 was intended to reflect the defiling character of these objects (Skt. catvāry artha, bhautika, bhūtika). See also 六塵.
