Basic Meaning: four major vinayas
Senses:
The four major influential vinaya texts that were transmitted to East Asia from early Indian Buddhism:
- the Four Part Vinaya 四分律 (T 1428, K 896) of the Dharmagupta school 法藏部, translated in 60 fasc. by Buddhayaśas;
- the Ten Recitations Vinaya 十誦律 (T 1435) of the Sarvâstivāda school 說一切有部, translated in 61 fasc. by Punyatara.
- the Five Part Vinaya 五分律 (T 1421) of the Mahīśāsaka school, translated in 30 fasc. by Buddhajīva and others, also known as Mahīśāsaka-nikāya-pañcavargavinaya.
- the Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya 摩訶僧祇律, tr. in 40 fasc.; by Buddhabhadra (T 1425).
