Basic Meaning: four major vinayas

Senses:

  • The four major influential vinaya texts that were transmitted to East Asia from early Indian Buddhism:
    1. the Four Part Vinaya 四分律 (T 1428, K 896) of the Dharmagupta school 法藏部, translated in 60 fasc. by Buddhayaśas;
    2. the Ten Recitations Vinaya 十誦律 (T 1435) of the Sarvâstivāda school 說一切有部, translated in 61 fasc. by Punyatara.
    3. the Five Part Vinaya 五分律 (T 1421) of the Mahīśāsaka school, translated in 30 fasc. by Buddhajīva and others, also known as Mahīśāsaka-nikāya-pañcavargavinaya.
    4. the Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya 摩訶僧祇律, tr. in 40 fasc.; by Buddhabhadra (T 1425).
