Basic Meaning: Recorded Sayings of the Four Houses
Senses:
Sijia yulu. Six fascicles; also known as Mazu sijialu 馬祖四家錄 and Sijialu 四家錄; X 1321. This is a collection of the recorded sayings of four distinguished Chan masters of the Tang dynasty 唐代, all in the line of Nanyue Huairang 南嶽懷讓 (677–744), namely, Mazu Daoyi 馬祖道一 (709–788), Baizhang Huaihai 百丈懷海 (720–814), Huangbo Xiyun 黃檗希運 (d. 850), and Linji Yixuan 臨濟義玄 (d. 866–867). The compiler, the sources upon which he drew, and the date of the first publication are unknown, but the title of the work is mentioned in the Suichutang shumu 遂初堂書目, an early Southern Song (1127–1279) catalog edited by the Confucian scholar Yu Mao 尤袤 (1127–1194). The Sijia yulu was reprinted in the Yuan dynasty 元代, but no copies of this edition are known to exist. The work was re-edited and published in 1607 by Jie Ning 解寧 (d.u.), also known as Jingshan jushi 靜山居士, of Dong'an 東安 (Zhejiang 浙江 province) and it is upon this edition that the present text is based. It is perhaps worth mentioning that a Japanese edition of the text from 1648 contains a preface by Yang Jie 楊傑, a Southern Song scholar-official, who recognized Huanglong Huinan 黃龍慧南 (1002–1069) as the compiler of the work. It appears that the compiler had rearranged material available to him from earlier texts, and except in the case of the section on Linji 臨濟, included within each section material taken from several of these sources, thus making each of the Sijia yulu
