四沙門

Basic Meaning: four kinds of śramaṇas

Senses:

  • Four kinds of monks: (1) one who is excellent in his practice of the Way 勝道沙門 (Skt. mārgajina) , such as a buddha or pratyekabuddha 獨覺; (2) one who expounds the Way without error 示道沙門, 說道沙門 (Skt. mārgadeśika), such as Śāriputra 舍利弗; (3) one who carries out his life in the practice of the three disciplines 三學, called 命道沙門 (Skt. mārgajīvin), such as Ānanda 阿難; (4) a defiled monk 汚道沙門/壞道沙門, who violates the four grave precepts 四重禁戒 (Skt. mārgadūsin).
