Basic Meaning: four seas

Senses:

  • The seas in the four cardinal directions around Mount Sumeru 須彌山, meaning 'the whole world.' Each sea is associated with one of the four continents 四大洲 of Jambu-dvīpa in the south 南贍部洲, Pūrva-videha in the east 東勝身洲, Apara-godānīya in the west 西牛貨洲, and Uttarā-kuru in the north.
