Basic Meaning: four meditation [heavens]

  • The four progressively subtle stages of meditation that lead one out from the desire realm into rebirth in the four meditation heavens. See 四禪定 and 四禪天 (Skt. catur-dhyāna; Pāli cattāri jhānāni).
