Basic Meaning: four types of maṇḍala
Senses:
The four types of maṇḍala utilized in the Japanese esoteric schools. This configuration is based on a passage from Amoghavajraʼs 不空 Synopsis of the Eighteen Assemblies in the Vajraśekhara Yoga 金剛頂經瑜伽十八會指歸, which describes the four types as: (1) Great maṇḍala 大曼荼羅 depicting configurations of deities, (2) samaya maṇḍala 三昧耶曼荼羅 depicting configurations of icons, (3) dharma maṇḍala 法曼荼羅 depicting configurations of bīja , and (4) three dimensional arrangements of deities called karma maṇḍala 羯磨曼荼羅.
