Basic Meaning: four kinds of dharma body

Senses:

  • As taught principally within esoteric Buddhism, these are: (1) The intrinsic-nature dharma body 自性法身, which is the real body of the buddhas, the dharma nature 法性. It is always existing throughout past, present, and future, and is revealed to the bodhisattvas. It is distinguished into the two types of (a) dharma body in principle 理法身, which is always still and primordially unchanged, and (b) the cognizing dharma body 智法身, which operates everywhere. (2) The enjoyment dharma body 受用法身, which is distinguished into the two types of (a) self-enjoyment 自受用法身, which as the same as the cognizing dharma body 智法身, and (b) the dharma body of enjoyment for others 他受用法身, which is the response body 報身 manifested for the purpose of bodhisattvas in the ten grounds 十地. (3) the transformation dharma body 變化法身, a sixteen-foot 丈六 body, which is manifested for bodhisattvas who have not yet entered the grounds, along with adherents of the two vehicles 二乘 and ordinary beings 凡夫.
