Basic Meaning: four types of birth and death
Senses:
Theories on the various types of birth and death in saṃsāra, elaborating on the two types of birth and death 二種生死.
- The Xianshilun 顯識論 divides the first type of birth and death, delimited birth and death 分段生死, into three divisions corresponding to the three realms 三界 along with the miraculous birth and death 變易生死 as the fourth type.

- According to the Shengman baoku 勝鬘寶窟, the four types of birth and death are birth and death of entry into the flow of suffering 流來生死, delimited birth and death, intermediary birth and death 中間生死, and miraculous birth and death.

- According to the tenth fascicle of Paramârthaʼs 眞諦 translation of the She dasheng lun 攝大乘論 and the second fascicle of the Foxing lun 佛性論, the four types of birth and death are subdivisions of miraculous birth and death. Birth and death of skillful means 方便生死 denotes the birth and death of bodhisattvas of the first to third bhūmi who are reborn for the benefit of sentient beings. Birth and death of causes and conditions 因緣生死 refers to the birth and death of bodhisattvas of the fourth to sixth bhūmi who will be reborn as seventh bhūmi bodhisattvas. Birth and death of all existence 有有生死, also called birth and death with remainder 後有生死, refers to bodhisattvas of seventh to ninth bhūmi who will be reborn in the tenth bhūmi. Birth and death without remainder 無有生死 is the attainment of awakening as a tathāgata.
