Basic Meaning: four kinds of reasoning

Senses:

  • As elaborated in the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra 解深密經 these are: empirical reasoning 觀待道理, reasoning based on causality 作用道理, deductive reasoning 證成道理, and reasoning according to the way things are 法爾道理. Syn. 四道理.Oda/DFB/FGD contain a detailed explanation (Skt. catasro yuktayaḥ; Tib. rigs pa bzhi po). These are discussed in detail in Asaṅgaʼs Abhidharmasamuccaya (T 1605.31.687a15-21) and Sthiramatiʼs Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā (T 1606.31.745b9-26).
