Basic Meaning: four kinds of great vehicle

Senses:

  • The four Mahāyānas, i. e. the four great schools: (1) 華嚴宗 Huayan or Avataṃsaka; (2) 天台宗 Tiantai; (3) 眞言宗 Zhenyan, or esoteric; (4) 禪宗 Chan, or meditation school. Another group is the Faxiang 法相宗, Sanlun 三論宗, Tiantai 天台宗, and Huayan 華嚴宗. [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, Soothill]
