四諦

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: four [noble] truths

Senses:

  • The noble truths (ārya-satya), which form the main content of the Buddhaʼs first sermon given at Vārāṇasī:
    1. the truth of suffering (duḥkha) 苦諦; suffering is the lot of the 六趣 six states of existence;
    2. the truth of the arising of suffering (samudaya) 集諦; it is the aggregation (or exacerbation) of suffering by reason of afflicted mental states;
    3. the truth of the cessation of suffering (nirodha) 滅諦; cessation is nirvana, the extinction of craving and its consequences, and the leaving of the sufferings of mortality as void and extinct;
    4. the truth of the path to the cessation of suffering (mārga) 道諦; this the way of extinction, i. e. the 八正道 eightfold correct path.
    The first two are considered to be related to this life, the last two to 出世間 a life outside or apart from the world. The four are described as the fundamental doctrines first preached to his five former ascetic companions. Also rendered as 四聖諦 and 四眞諦. See also 四種四諦 (Skt. catur-vidhaṃ satyam, catuḥ-satya, satya-catuṣṭaya; catur-ārya-satya, catvāri-ārya-satyāni; catvāri..ṣatyāni, duḥkhaṃ tat-samudaya-nirodha-pratipakṣāś ca, duḥkha-samudaya-nirodha-mārga, satya; Pāli cattāri ariya-saccāni; Tib.
