Basic Meaning: provisional existence formed by causes
Senses:
The provisional existence 假有 of all conditioned dharmas 有爲法 that exist without intrinsic nature 自性 (svabhāva). It is the first of the three types of provisional existence 三假 taught by the masters of the *Tattvasiddhi śāstra 成實論. In his Dasheng xuanlun 大乘玄論, Jizang 吉藏 gives the example of the pillar 柱, the provisional existence of which is based upon derivative material formations 所造色 ultimately constituted in atoms of the four elements 四大. He also adduces the example of the five aggregates 五陰 which, when in coordinated causal relation, together compose a human being. Composite objects such as the pillar formed by material particles, or the human being formed by five aggregates, owe their provisional existence to underlying causal processes involving ultimately real constituents 勝義有. FGD gives the example of the human body formed as a result of the combination of the inheritance from oneʼs father, from oneʼs mother, and the power of karma from oneʼs previous life 業力.
