Yuanzhao. Eighth century Tang period Chinese monk, disciple of the esoteric master Bukong 不空, who ended up becoming one of the most prominent monks of the latter half of the eight century. He entered the order under the tutelage of the Vinaya specialist Jingyun of Ximing monastery. He was known for the breadth of his scholarship, as he was deeply versed in the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa-sūtra 維摩經, Lotus Sutra 法華, Buddhist Logic 因明 and Consciousness-only 唯識, the Nirvana Sutra 涅槃經 and Huayan 華嚴. He also studied ritual, as well as Confucius and Mozi. Despite the breadth of his learning, he is most well-known for his work in the area of Esoteric Buddhism. His dates are not listed, but it is recorded that he lived to the age of eighty-two. He wrote the Biaozhiji 表制集 and the Xu Kaiyuan shijiao mulu 續開元釋教目錄.
