Basic Meaning: earth

Senses:

  • The ground (esp. as contrasted to heaven 天). A land, a country, territory. The Skt. pṛthivī is transliterated as 鉢里體尾 (Tib. sa gzhi). The concept is also rendered as 土地, with the implications of 'capable of producing'  能生 and 'that on which things rely'  所依. See, for example 地煩惱. [Charles Muller, Stephen Hodge]

  • Field of activity 「地謂行處」 (Skt. bhūmir-nāma gati-viṣayaḥ). [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura]
  • A level, a stage (Skt. bhūmi; Tib. sa). A reference to one of the ten 'grounds' (stages) 十地 (Skt. daśabhūmi) in the bodhisattvaʼs course of practice. A stage in the progression on the path towards enlightenment. Bhūmi is transliterated as 步弭. [Charles Muller, Stephen Hodge]
  • A field (Skt. kṣetra; Tib. zhing). A place, a scene, a location, a situation, a position (Skt. talima); transliterated as 託史麼, 託吏麼. [Charles Muller, Stephen Hodge]
