增一阿含經

Basic Meaning: Increased by One Āgama Sutras

Senses:

  • Incremental Āgama. Zengyi ahan jing; Skt. Ekôttarâgama-sūtra/*Ekôttarikâgama-sūtra. One of the four collections of sūtras in the Āgama division 四阿含經, one of the five canonical collections of discourses of the Buddha as contained in the Dharma Collection 法藏 by the Theravādins 上座部. 51 fasc. In the present Taishō Canon, this text still carries the ascription to Gautama Saṃghadeva 瞿曇僧伽提婆, who is supposed to have translated a version of this collection in 397. However, in both traditional and modern scholarship, the ascription of the extant version of the text has been the topic of much controversy. For references to the most important scholarship on the question, see citations in Radich and Anālayo (2017) and Radich (2017); these studies argue, on the basis of copious internal evidence, that the extant text should rather be ascribed to the translation group centering on Zhu Fonian 竺佛念. T 125.2.549a1–830b. This collection has 52 chapters, containing a total of 451 sutras. Subjects expounded are numbered from one to eleven and the sutras are grouped according to their contents, including such topics as the four truths 四諦, eightfold path 八正道, the four groups of disciples 四衆, entering the path 入道, making offerings 利養, precepts 戒, spiritual teachers 善知識, the three treasures 三寶 and so forth. (Pāli Aṅguttara-nikāya) A preface to this text by Dao'an 道安 is extant, in which he not only describes the date of the earlier translation as 384–385, but also gives an account of the translator.
