Basic Meaning: Great Vehicle School
Senses:
The school of Mahāyāna, attributed to the rise in India of the Madhyamaka, i.e. the 中觀宗 or 三論宗 school ascribed to Nāgârjuna, and the Yogâcāra school 法相宗 school, the other schools being Hīnayāna. In China and Japan the 倶舍宗 and 成實宗 are classed as Hīnayāna, the rest being Mahāyāna, of which the principal schools are 律宗, 法相宗 , 三論宗, 華嚴宗, 天台宗, 眞言宗 , 淨土宗 , 禪宗
