Basic Meaning: Sutra of the True Dharma of the Mahāyāna Bodhisattva Canon

  • The Dasheng pusa zang zhengfa jing. 40 fascicles in 11 chapters, K 1487, T 316; Skt. Bodhisattvapiṭaka, Tib. Byaṅ-chub-sems-dpa'i-sde-snod. Translation by Dharmarakṣa 法護: (Cf. K 1475). Nanjō 1005; Ono. 7:336a; Tōhoku 56; Ōtani 760 (12); Mvy.1330. Also known as 菩薩藏正法經, 菩薩藏經, and 正法經. Basically, the Buddha teaches the six perfections to Śāriputra on Vulture Peak 鷲峰山 at Rājagṛha 王舍城. The sūtra includes a disproportionately long introduction, wherein after the summer retreat at Śrāvastī, on the road to Rājagṛha he meets the householder disciple Bhadrapāla 賢護長者 and teaches him. After this he has a question and answer session with a yakṣa 夜叉, and then proceeds up to Vulture Peak. Starting from Chapter Six with the perfection of giving 布施波羅蜜 (fascicle 17) he teaches the six perfections 六波羅蜜, spending a great deal of time on the maintenance of the precepts 持戒 and the perfection of vigilance 精進波羅蜜.
