Basic Meaning: Daxiu Zhengnian
Senses:
(1215–1290. ) In Japanese, Daikyū Shōnen, also Butsugen Zenji 佛眼禪師. Chinese monk of the Linji (J. Rinzai) school 臨濟宗. Founder of the Daikyū Branch 大休派 (also called the 佛源門徒) , one of the twenty-four transmissions of Zen 禪宗二十四流 that reached Japan. He arrived in Japan in 1269 and became the founder of the Jōchiji 淨智寺 in Kamakura. The date of his death is incorrectly recorded in most dictionaries because he died on the thirtieth day of the eleventh month of Shōō, which is on January 12 of 1290. He also became the third abbot of Kenchōji 建長寺 and the second abbot of Engakuji 圓覺寺 in Kamakura. [Michel Mohr]
