Basic Meaning: great perfect mirror cognition
Senses:
As a great round mirror reflects all forms exactly as they are, so does the cognition of the Buddha. A clear, undefiled mind. In Yogâcāra theory, one of the four undefiled forms of cognition 四智 that are the result of the transmutation of the various forms of previously defiled consciousness upon becoming a Buddha. In this case it is the pure cognition experienced at Buddhahood by a qualitative transmutation of the eighth consciousness. The mirror cognition can know all objects without distortion or interference. Once this cognition is attained, the mind and its various factors function in accordance. Abbreviated as 鏡智 (Skt. ādarśa-jñāna; Tib. me long lta bu'i ye shes). [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Nakamura,YBh-Ind, JEBD, Hirakawa, Yokoi,Iwanami]
In esoteric Buddhism 密教 it is one of the five kinds of perfected cognition 五智 and is associated with Akṣobhya Buddha 阿閦佛. [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Nakamura,YBh-Ind, JEBD, Hirakawa, Yokoi,Iwanami]
In his commentary on the Sutra of Immeasurable Life, Wonhyo equates this cognition with the unequalled peerless most excellent cognition 無等無倫最上勝智 taught in that sūtra, as well as with the cognition of all distinct phenomena 一切種智.
