Basic Meaning: Dual-Bodied *Mahākêśvara-deva King Vināyaka Refuge Recitation Rite
Senses:
The Dasheng huanxi shuangshenda zizai tian pinayejia wang guiyi niansong gongyang fa; Skt. *Mahārya-nandi; 1 fasc., T 1270. Translated attributed to Śubhakarasiṃha 善無畏. A practice text comprised of various mantras, mudrās and instructions for crafting an icon of Vināyaka (see 歡喜天). Similar to the Hindu Purāṇas, Vināyaka is identified as the son of Mahêśvara 大自在天 and Umā 烏摩, though he is described as wicked. His benevolent sibling *Śanayaka 扇那夜迦 whom he embraces in the dual-bodied icon is an emanation 化身 of Avalokitêśvara 觀音 intent on taming him. The text insists the practice is a means to attainments 成就, and ignorance of it leads to many obstacles 障礙, thus one first practices it, which has a parallel in Hindu traditions in which Gaṇeśa is worshipped at the beginning of any rite. The icon is the dual-bodied embracing couple 夫婦. It further provides additional spells for bringing down wicked people 降伏惡人 and silencing others 停口舌.
