大安樂不空眞實菩薩

Basic Meaning: Vajrāmoghasamayasattva Bodhisattva

Senses:

  • A bodhisattva in the Court of Omniscience 遍知院 in the Garbhadhātu maṇḍala 胎藏界曼荼羅. Also written 大安樂不空金剛三昧耶眞實菩薩, 大安樂不空眞實菩薩, 大安樂眞實菩薩, 普賢延命菩薩. The color of white flesh 白肉色, sitting on a red lotus and wearing a cap of the five buddhas 五佛冠. His twenty arms carry items associated with the sixteen great bodhisattvas 十六大菩薩 of the Vajradhātu and the four gathering bodhisattvas 四攝菩薩. These were redone in Japan based on the icons of the Vajradhātu 金剛界. Seed syllable: yu (derived from āyus). Mudrās: lotus añjali 蓮華合掌, *Samantabhadrāyuḥ-bodhisattva-mudrā 普賢延命菩薩印. Mantra: oṃ vajrāyuṣe svāhā. He is especially revered in Tendai 天台宗. In the late Heian period he was worshipped as the primary figure for curing illness and safe childbirth.
