Basic Meaning: Dayuling
Senses:
A mountain twenty-five li south of Dayu 大庾 County, Nan-an 南安 (Jiangxi 江西 Province). The mountain is surrounded on either side by the two provinces of Jiangxi and Guangdong 廣東. In old times the south of the mountain was referred to as
'Lingnan'
嶺南 and the north as
'Lingbei'
嶺北. Because there were many plum 梅 trees at its peak, it was also called Meiling 梅嶺. It was also known as Tailing 台嶺. This mountain is famous in the Chan records of sayings 禪語錄 as the place where Mengshan Daoming 蒙山道明 (Huiming 慧明) confronted the sixth patriarch of the Chan school 禪宗, Huineng 慧能 (who at that time was referred to as Lu Xingzhe 盧行者,
'Itinerant Monk Lu'
).
