Basic Meaning: Damingbao
Senses:
(1114–1173) A Song period 宋代 Caodong school 曹洞宗 monk from Cizhou 磁州 (Hebei 河北 province) with the surname Wu 武. He studied the Confucian classics at age six and joined the monkhood at eight. From the age of nineteen he studied Chan 禪 under Zurong 祖榮 (n.d.) of Jizhaoan 寂照菴 and received the full precepts at twenty-seven. He later departed from Zurong to go and visit Xibian 希辨 (921–997; also referred to as 一辨) of Puzhaosi 普照寺 (Qingzhou 靑州, Shandong 山東 province) at Wanshousi 萬壽寺 in Yanjing 燕京 (Beijing 北京). Xibian immediately saw his potential and made him canon prefect 知藏. Damingbao realized awakening under Xibian and inherited his dharma before quickly going into retreat at Sishui 泗水 in Shandong. At thirty-six he become the abbot at Lingyansi 靈巖寺 at Taishan 泰山 in Changqing 長淸 (Shandong province) and then at Qiyinsi 棲隱寺 at Yangshan 仰山. In 1155 he returned to his birthplace of Cizhou and, at the request of the local people, became the abbot and restorer of Damingsi 大明寺. He spent his later years in retreat at Zishan 紫山 and Zhouyu 谼峪. He passed away on the seventh day of the seventh month at the age of sixty after spreading the dharma for thirty-four years.
