Basic Meaning: great meditating man
Senses:
An abbreviation of 大禪定門士. An honorary title for a male lay Chan/Seon/Zen practitioner, attached to their ordination name 戒名. Originally this title was only used for high-ranking founding patrons of temples, but depending on the time period and place it was also used for other laypeople regardless of rank. The equivalent title for women is 大禪定尼.
