Basic Meaning: Dasui and the conflagration at the end of the age
Senses:
Also written 大隋劫火%. This phrase is a reference to the gong'an 公案 in which a monk asks Dasui Fazhen 大隋法眞 (834–919) what will happen when the conflagration comes at the end of the eon 劫火 and the great trichiliocosm 三千大千世界 is destroyed. Dasui replies that it will certainly be destroyed. Here, the monk asked his question on an intellectual level based on the scriptures he had read, expecting that Dasui would respond that there is an underlying nature that cannot be destroyed. Dasuiʼs answer, however, implies that the response to such a question must encompass both extinction and non-extinction.
