Basic Meaning: Cheonyeong
Senses:
(1215–1286) Korean monk from the mid-Goryeo dynasty and fifth National Teacher of the Suseonsa Society 修禪社 established by Jinul (知訥; 1158–1210). Also known as Chunggyeong 冲鏡 and Won-o 圓悟. He was born in Namwon, and at the age of 15, he entered the saṃgha and studied under National Teacher Jingak (眞覺國師; 1178–1234). Cheonyeong passed the Seon examination (Seonseon 禪選) and attained the degree of sangsanggwa 上上科. He later returned to Jogye mountain and studied under the National Teacher Cheongjin (淸眞國師; ?–1252) and National Teacher Jinmyeon (眞明國師; 1191–1271). He followed Honwon and went to Choeuʼs 崔瑀 home temple Seonwonsa in Gaegyeong, but returned to Suseonsa when Honwon became the Dharma master (beopju 法主) of the society. In 1256, Honwon recommended Cheonyeong to the king as his successor and retired as the National Teacher at Suseonsa. The king subsequently gave him the title of
'Great Seon Master'
(daeseonsa 大禪 師) and made him the fifth Dharma master of Suseonsa. He passed away at the age of 72 while residing at Bulgaesa 佛蓋寺, and was given the posthumous title, National Teacher Jajin Won-o 慈眞圓悟國師 by King Chungnyeol (忠烈王; r.1275–1308).
