天魔

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Deva-māra

Senses:

  • One of the four/five Māras 四魔/五魔, who dwells in the sixth heaven. Paranirmita-vaśavartin 他化自在天, at the top of the Kāmadhātu, with his innumerable host, whence he constantly obstructs the Buddha-truth and its followers. He is also styled 殺者 the slayer; also Pāpīyān 波旬, the evil one, explained by 惡愛 sinful love or desire, as he sends his daughters to seduce the saints. He is the special Māra of the Śākyamuni period; other buddhas suffer from other Māras. Abbreviation of 天子魔; also called 他化自在天魔 and 自在天魔 (Skt. deva-putra-māra, māra, deva-māra; Tib. lha'i bu'i bdud; Pāli deva-putta-māra). 〔瑜伽論 T 1579.30.447c20; 涅槃經〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, Soothill, YBh-Ind, Hirakawa, Yokoi, Iwanami]
