天鼓雷音如來

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Divyadundubhimeghanirghoṣa Tathāgata

Senses:

  • The Buddha occupying the northern direction in the center court of the eight-petaled lotus 中臺八葉院 in the Garbhadhātu maṇḍala 胎藏界曼荼羅. Seed syllables: aḥ, haṃ. Secret name 密號: budong jin'gang 不動金剛. The color of gold 黃金色, he is seated on a lotus 蓮華. His left hand is in the position of the fist mudrā 拳印 placed at the navel. His right hand is in the position of the earth-pointing mudrā 觸地印. His mudrā is the lotus añjali 蓮華合掌. His mantra 眞言 is namaḥ samantabuddhānāṃ haṃ haḥ svāhā. The Mahāvairocana-sūtra 大日經 (T 848; fasc. 1) describes him as the 'unmoving Buddha'  不動佛, freed from afflictions 離惱 and in pure samādhi 淸涼定. The Darijing shu 大日經疏 (T 1796; fasc. 4) defines him as the nirvana wisdom 涅槃智 of the Tathāgata, hence the meaning of unmoving. His original name is stated to be 'Sound of Drums Tathāgata'  鼓音如來. The teaching of Dharma and awakening of beings is likened to celestial drums 天鼓 which are formless 無形相 and non-abiding 無住處, just as mahā-parinirvāṇa 大般涅槃 is. Corresponds to Amoghasiddhi Tathāgata 不空成就如來 in the Vajradhātu 金剛界.
