Basic Meaning: forgetfulness

Senses:

  • In the everyday sense, to lose self-control, such as when one is inebriated. (smṛti-nāśa) [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Nakamura]
  • Loss of focus. One of the twenty derivative afflictions 隨煩惱 in Yogâcāra, and among these twenty, one of the eight that is directly associated with the manas 末那識. A state of distraction and loss of ability to hold to the object of perception, especially in the case of śamatha 奢摩他 meditation. A mistaken or impaired memory. It is considered to be a derivative of folly, not having its own seeds (Skt. muṣita-smṛti, smṛti-lopa, pramuṣitayā-smṛtyā, smṛti-saṃpramoṣa; bhraṣṭa-smṛtika, muṣita-smṛtitā, muṣitā smṛtiḥ, smṛti-pramoṣa, smṛti-vaikalya; Tib. brjed ngas pa). 〔成唯識論 T 1585.31.33b4〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, YBh-Ind, Hirakawa, Iwanami]
