Basic Meaning: tathāgata meditation

Senses:

  • One of the four kinds of meditation 四種禪 mentioned in the T 670 and T 671 versions of the Laṅkâvatāra-sūtra 楞伽經, and one of the five kinds of meditation outlined in Zongmiʼs Chan Preface 禪源諸詮集都序. It means the Chan transmitted from the Buddha, and indicates experiencing the enlightenment of the Buddhaʼs meditation, and working for others' benefit. Also known as the pure Chan of the Tathāgata 如來淸淨禪 and the Chan of the supreme vehicle 最上乘禪.
