妙法蓮華經憂波提舍

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Saddharmapuṇḍarīkôpadeśa

Senses:

  • Miaofa lianhua jing youbotishe. 2 fasc. One version translated by Bodhiruci 菩提流支 and Tanlin 曇林 (T 1519) and another version translated by Ratnamati (with Seungnang 僧朗 and others) (T 1520). Usually abbreviated as 法華論, also known as the 妙法蓮華經論 and 蓮華經論. A short commentary on the Lotus Sutra 法華經, attributed to Vasubandhu 世親. The only surviving commentary on the Lotus Sutra that is of Indian provenance. This commentary does not treat the entire sutra, but focuses on the Preface 序品 and the chapters on Skillful Means 方便品 and Parables 譬喩品. It seems to follow the Nepalese version of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra rather than the version upon which Kumārajīva 鳩摩羅什 based his translation. The translation of this work by Ratnamati 勒那摩提 of the Wei Dynasty is known as the Fahuajing lun 法華經論. See Terry Rae Abbott, “Vasubandhuʼs Commentary to the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra: A Study of Its History and Significance.” PhD diss. UC Berkeley, 1985. The two versions, are differentiated from each other by slightly different Chinese titles (the Ratnamati work includes the word ). The Bodhiruci version is 妙法蓮華經憂波提舍. The Ratnamati version is 妙法蓮華經論優波提舍.
