Basic Meaning: Andō Bun'ei

Senses:

  • (1883–1958) A monk of the Sōtō school 曹洞宗 of Japanese Zen. His Buddhist name was Tetsuzan 哲山. He was a native of Mikkabi (Shizuoka 靜岡 prefecture), and a dharma heir of Oda Zen'ei 織田禪英 (d.u.) of Enmeiji 延命寺. After he graduated from the Sōtō school university, he became a research student and had majored in the schoolʼs doctrine. In 1905 he became abbot Rinkai'in 鄰海院 and later served as abbot of Daitō'in 大洞院, Sōshinji 崇信寺 (all in Shizuoka), and Tōzenji 東禪寺 (Chiba 千葉). In 1922, while teaching as professor in Komazawa University, he was appointed headmaster of the schoolʼs middle-school in Setagaya (Tokyo), as well as the superintendent 監院 of Sōjiji 總持寺 (Yokohama). In 1914, he had compiled the Shōbōgenzō chūkai zensho 正法眼藏註解全書. The following year he edited the Zengaku jiten 禪學辭典 and wrote the Eihei daishingi tsūkai 永平大淸規通解. He later edited several volumes of talks by Akino Kōdō 秋野孝道 (1858–1934) including the Fukan zazengi kōwa 勸坐禪儀講話 and the Zazen yōjinki kōwa 坐禪用心記講話. [Erez Joskovich; source(s): ZGDJT]
