Basic Meaning: Extensive Record of the Chan Master Hongzhi

Senses:

  • Nine fascicles; T 2001, completed in 1166. Also known as Tiantong Zhengjue chanshi guanglu 天童正覺禪師廣錄, Hongzhi guanglu 宏智廣錄, and Hongzhi lu 宏智錄. A collection of sermons, writing, and verses of Chan master Hongzhi Zhengjue 宏智正覺 (1091–1157) of the Caodong school 曹洞宗, compiled by his disciples. The first fascicle contains formal sermons and informal talks given at various temples where Hongzhi had resided before 1129 when he moved to Jingdesi 景德寺 on Mt. Tiantong 天童山 in Ningbo 寧波 prefecture (Zhejiang 浙江 province). Fascicle two comprises the Xuedou Zhongxian 雪竇重顯 (980–1052) Baize songgu 百則頌古 (lit: “Hundred Old Cases with Verse Comments”). Fascicle three consists of the Niangu baize 拈古百則, another collection of one-hundred gong'an 公案, each with a short prose comment. Fascicle four and five contain, respectively, Hongzhiʼs formal sermons and informal talks at Jingdesi. Fascicle six contains his dharma talks 法語, or instruction for religious practice written for individual students. Fascicle seven contains his verses composed in praise of old masters 眞贊 and for funerary rituals of deceased disciples and friends 下火. Fascicle eight and nine are composed of Hongzhiʼs religious verses 偈頌, and his aphorisms 箴銘.
