Basic Meaning: a tenet

Senses:

  • A thesis (Skt. pakṣa, pratijñā; Tib. dam bcas pa). In Buddhist logic, the first part of the three-part or five-part syllogism (三支作法, 五支作法). For a systematic overview including this term, see 能立 as well as 因明. [Charles Muller, Stephen Hodge; source(s): Ui, JEBD, Iwanami]
  • A certain teaching or tradition which has come from a certain source. A sect or denomination: the definitive doctrine of a certain school or sect. Schools are of two kinds: (1) those founded on principles having historic continuity, as the twenty schools of the Hīnayāna, the thirteen schools of China, and the fourteen schools of Japan: (2) those arising from an individual interpretation of the general teaching of Buddhism, as the sub-schools founded by Yongming 永明 (d. 975), such as the school that posits characteristics 法相宗, the school of Dharma-nature 法性宗, and the school that refutes characteristics 破相宗. Or those based on a peculiar interpretation of one of the recognized schools, as the Jōdo-shinshū 淨土眞宗 found by Shinran-shōnin.
