Shūkō (1326–1389). A monk of the Rinzai school, also called Getsuan 月菴, born in Gifu Prefecture. In his youth he studied under Hōō 峰翁 of the Daien-ji 大圓時. Afterwards he visited many Zen masters, such as 古先, Musō 夢窗, etc. At last he was declared by Daichū 大蟲 of the Shūshōji 宗昌寺 to have attained enlightenment. In 1367 he founded the Daimyōji 大明寺 in Hyōgo Prefecture. He also founded the Enryakuji 延暦寺, Daidō-ji 大道寺, and Zenshōji 禪昌寺. A collection of his sermons has been published. (1643–1710). Also called Rōjū 露柱. A priest of the Rinzai school, born in Hyōgo, who also practiced Shingon. In 1697 he became the 258th chief priest of the Daitokuji 大德寺. [Charles Muller; source(s): JEBD]
