  • (809–884). Early Heian 平安時代 period (794–1185) Shingon 眞言宗 monk known as one of the eight monks who went to the Tang 入唐八家. Originally studied Tendai 天台宗 under Gishin 義眞 and Enchin 圓珍 at Mt. Hiei 比叡山 before studying Hossō 法相 at Kōfukuji 興福寺. Later he became a disciple of Jichie 實慧 at Tōji 東寺 where he studied Shingon. He also studied under Shinshō 眞紹 (797–873), who was a disciple of Kūkai 空海 (774–835). In 862 Shūei went to Tang China with Shinnyo 眞如. He received the vajradhātu initiation 金剛界大法 from Xuanqing 玄慶 in Bianzhou 汴州 and the garbhadhātu initiation 胎藏界大法 from Faquan 法全 at Qinglongsi 靑龍寺. He further visited Mt. Tiantai 天台山 and sites of significance to Śubhakarasiṃha 善無畏 (637–735) before returning to Japan in 865 with a number of Mikkyō 密教 texts, which are listed in his Shin shosha shōrai hōmon tō mokuroku 新書寫請來法門等目錄 (T 2174a). In 879 he became the fifth chōja 長者 of Tōji. He served as bettō 別當 of Tōdaiji 東大寺 and gained the rank of sōjō 僧正. He had deep connections to the Seiwa Emperor 淸和天皇 (r. 858–876), receiving his favor. He is also known as Kō Nittō sōjō 後入唐僧正, Engakuji sōjō 圓覺寺僧正 and Zenrinji sōjō 禪林寺僧正. His works included the Kō nittō den 後入唐傳 and Taizō shidai 胎藏次第 (Taizōkai nenju shidai 胎藏界念誦次第).
