宗法

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: the thesis property also found in its logical reason (pakṣadharma)

Senses:

  • A property shared by the thesis (pakṣa ) of an inference with the reason (hetu ) and, sometimes the positive example (sapakṣa 同品). In the three-member inference (trairūpya, cf. 因三相) advanced by Buddhist logic, the thesis statement and the reason supporting it must share a common property, which is called the pakṣa-dharma, rendered literally into Chinese as 宗法 (pakṣa = = thesis; dharma = = property). In the stock example of the three-membered inference:

    Thesis: Sound is impermanent.

    Reason: Because it is produced.

    Positive example: like a jar.

The pakṣadharma is 'impermanence,' since whatever can be produced is impermanent and will eventually disintegrate or be destroyed. So the thesis and the reason share the property 'impermanence.' For a systematic overview including this term, see 能立. [Dan Lusthaus]
