Basic Meaning: to establish

Senses:

  • To decide; to determine, fix, settle, arrange. To be decided, be settled, be certain. Definitely, certainly. [Charles Muller]
  • The unification of the mind in concentration; stopping the floating of the mind and concentrating on one point. A high level of meditative concentration; mental training through meditation; the skillful unification of mind and object; the mental equanimity conducive to and derived from attention perfectly focused on its object. Meditative absorption; meditative concentration; meditative equipoise; meditatively equipoised. 禪定 meditation (in the realms of form and beyond form). It is also one of the five attributes of the dharmakāya 法身 (Skt. dhyāna, samādhi, samāhita, samāpanna; Tib. bsam gtan, Tib. ting nge 'dzin, mnyam par gzhag pa, Tib. snyoms par zhugs pa). An internal state of imperturbability or tranquility, exempt from all external sensations 超受陰.

    In Yogâcāra doctrine, it is one of the 'object contingent' (別境) mental factors. This logograph is often used interchangeably with (Skt. śamatha). Most commonly transliterated as 三昧 and 三摩提, like dhyāna, a term for meditation, but especially indicative of a deep level of concentration. the Cheng weishi lun says: "Its nature is that of causing mind to be absorbed in attention on a contemplated object and not become distracted, and its function is that of supporting knowledge." 〔成唯識論 T 1585.31.28b
