定
PronunciationsSenses:
In Yogâcāra doctrine, it is one of the 'object contingent' (別境) mental factors. This logograph is often used interchangeably with 止 (Skt. śamatha). Most commonly transliterated as 三昧 and 三摩提, like dhyāna, a term for meditation, but especially indicative of a deep level of concentration. the Cheng weishi lun says: "Its nature is that of causing mind to be absorbed in attention on a contemplated object and not become distracted, and its function is that of supporting knowledge." 〔成唯識論 T 1585.31.28b〕
