定額寺

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: set-amount temple

Senses:

  • Temples on a fixed stipend. A technical term in Japanese Buddhism for a class of temples that were established during the Nara and Heian periods. These officially sponsored temples were usually referred to as jōgakuji or daiji (大寺 'important temples' ). Jōgakuji were officially recognized by the state and received a fixed subsidy from the government, as did daiji. These temples received funds for standard equipment such as oil, candles, and for repairs in exchange for submitting inventories (資財帳 shizaichō) of their assets to the state. They derived revenue from their own land-holdings rather than relying entirely on state support, and were allowed nenbundōsha (annually appointed ordinands to each school). This class of temple was created In response to a perceived growing problem of the haphazard proliferation of privately-run temples that handled their own finances (and thus, profits), the imperial government began, in 680 to establish a policy wherein temples were placed under government control, each being financed according to government policies, and also being subject to periodic governmental inspections and so forth.
