Basic Meaning: one who goes from clan to clan

Senses:

  • The name of a kind of sage in early Indian Nikāya Buddhism. One of the twenty-seven wise ones 二十七賢聖, and one of the eighteen learners 十八有學 (Pāli kulankula; Skt. kulaṃ-kula; Tib. rigs nas rigs su skye ba). A type of stream-enterer 入流, so called because he or she goes 'from clan to clan,' in the sense that their remaining rebirths (3 max.) take place in good families (cf. Madhyamâgama 127 at T 26.1.616a13). This practitioner is aiming toward the level of once-returner 一來向 in the four stages of the śrāvaka path 聲聞四果. He or she has eliminated the third and fourth class of the afflictions of the desire realm countered in the path of cultivation, and upon dying, will be reborn two or three times as a sagely human or celestial in the desire realm.
