Basic Meaning: Jakushitsu Genkō

Senses:

  • (1290–1367) A Japanese Rinzai 臨濟宗 monk from 高田 in 美作, Okayama 岡山 prefecture with the surname Fujiwara 藤原. He joined the monkhood at thirteen and served under Mui Shōgen 無爲昭元 (1245–1311) of Sanshōji 三聖寺 in Yamashiro 山城 (Kyoto) before later receiving the full precepts. At age sixteen he studied under Yakuō Tokken 約翁德儉 (1244–1320) of Zenkōji 禪興寺 in Sagami 相模 (Kanagawa 神奈川 prefecture) and then resided at Kenninji 建仁寺, Kenchōji 建長寺, and Nanzenji 南禪寺. In 1320 he travelled to Yuan 元 China with Kaō Sōnen 可翁宗然 (n.d.), *Don'an Shun 鈍庵俊 (n.d) and others and met with Zhongfeng Mingben 中峰明本 (1263–1323). Before returning to Japan in 1326 he studied under many masters including Yuansou Xingduan 元叟行端 (1255–1341), Gulin Qingmao 古林淸茂 (1262–1329), Qingzhuo Zhengcheng 淸拙正澄 (1274–1339), Lingshi Ruzhi 靈石如芝 (n.d.), Juexue Shicheng 絕學世誠 (1270–1342, Wujian Xiandu 無見先覩 (1265–1334), and Duanya Liaoyi 斷崖了義 (n.d.). In 1334 he was invited to become the founding abbot of Eitokuji 永德寺 in Bingo 備後 (Okayama 岡山 prefecture). Following this, he retreated into isolation for many years, but then in 1351 he took up residence at Fukugonji 福嚴寺 in Hyōgo 兵庫 prefecture and then at Ōjōji 往生寺 in Ōmi 近江 (Shiga 滋賀 prefecture) before being invited to be the founding abbot at Yōgenji 永源寺 in Ōmi in 1361, where it is said that he attracted two thousand listeners. He passed away on the first day of the ninth month at the age of seventy-eight after spreading the dharma for sixty-three years. In 1395 he was given the posthumous title Enno Zenji 圓應禪師.
