Basic Meaning: Śrāmaṇyaphala sūtra

Senses:

  • The Jizhiguo jing. 1 fasc., K 658, T 22. Translation by 曇無蘭 (Skt. Dharmarakṣa?): between the 6th and the 20th years of Taiyuan 太元, Eastern Jin dynasty 東晉 (381–395) in Xie zhen xi Monastery 謝鎭西寺, Yangdu 楊都.1 Nanjō 593; Ono. 5:42d. The original text bears close resemblance to the texts in Pāli canon DN.2 Sāmañña-phalasutta. Variant translation contained in Dīrghâgama T 1(27)沙門果經. The composition is before the schism in the saṃgha. This discourse is given at Qiyunai Park 耆域奈園 in Rājagṛha 王舍城.Śākyamuni give a response to King Ajātaśatru 阿闍世王 about the life of monks and its rewards. After hearing that, the King was ashamed of his past and became a disciple of the Buddha. The tragedy of Rājagṛha 王舍城 told in the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra 大般涅槃經 and Guan wuliangshou jing 觀無量壽經 are based on the material in this text.
