Basic Meaning: Puruṣapura
Senses:
The ancient capital of Gandhāra, the modern Peshawar. Translated as 丈夫國 (City of Strong Men). Established by King Kaniṣka 迦膩伽, and located in the vicinity of the present-day Peshawar. Kaniṣka built many temples and stūpas there, and later it became a center for Mahāyāna studies. Both Asaṅga 無著 and Vasubandhu 世親 are said to have been born in this city. Although it still was a capital at the time of Xuanzang 玄奘, its temples had already fallen into ruin. Also rendered in Chinese as 富留沙富羅 and 弗樓沙國
